Gertrude Studios 2014 Part Two

21 November -
19 December 2014

200 Gertrude Street

200 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy

Opening: Friday 21 November, 6-8PM

Held annually since 1988, the Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artists' exhibition presents a snapshot of the diversity of practices supported by Gertrude Contemporary’s studio program. In 2014, the exhibition took place over two months with the sixteen Studio Artists split into two exhibiting groups. Gertrude Studios Part Two was curated by Shae Nagorcka and featured work across a variety of media including video, sculptural installation, sound and photography.

Bridie Lunney presented a new iteration of her site-specific sculptural installations, drawing from travel in Saudi Arabia to explore themes of the body, space and perception. In the main exhibition space, Danae Valenza constructed an experiential sound installation, blending performance and recording into a non-linear space for the audience to explore. Alasdair McLuckie’s collage works combined geometric rhythms and representational imagery to create hypnotic visual fields.

Helen Grogan's work ACTION AND FRAME (Gertrude Contemporary gallery with pillar), 2014, was distributed across sculpture, photography and live activity. As part of this work, a series of enacted propositions will take place at 2.30pm each Saturday throughout the duration of the exhibition (22 and 29 November, and 6 and 13 December).

Gertrude Studios Part Two also features new work from Søren Dahlgaard, Agatha Gothe-Snape and Charlie Sofo.

For over three decades Gertrude Contemporary’s studio program has supported early to mid-career artists. Offering artists a large subsidised studio in our exhibition and studio complex in Fitzroy, the program also provides creative and professional support, and advocacy as part of the Gertrude community of artists, curators, writers and audiences.

Gertrude Contemporary’s Studio Program was generously supported by the Danielle and Daniel Besen Foundation.
