Opening: 28 October 6–8pm 2016

Gertrude Contemporary was pleased to present Gertrude Studios 2016, a group exhibition featuring new works and projects by all sixteen current Gertrude Studio Artists in 2016. Initiated in 1988, the annual Gertrude Studios exhibitions present a selective snapshot of contemporary art practice and research being generated in Melbourne.

Conceived as providing an overview into the work being produced within our studio program, the exhibition is not intended as a thematic exploration of a particular idea, but rather, presents singular works and discrete projects from a range of artists to emphasise the diversity of practices supported within the Studio Program. Beyond the solo presentations from Gertrude’s Studio Artists presented throughout the year at our satellite site Gertrude Glasshouse, this exhibition renders public the creative thinking and production consistently generating in the sixteen studios located above our Gertrude Street premises.

Gertrude Contemporary is constantly evolving as an organisation and the Gertrude Studios exhibitions have been a chronicle of artistic practice in Melbourne for 28 years, eagerly anticipated by our audiences.

For Gertrude Studios 2016, artists presentined works in a broad range of media including, sculpture, film, photography, painting and site-responsive installations.

During the course of Gertrude Studios 2016, Gertrude hosted an Open Studios Day on Saturday 19 November, inviting visitors to wander through the entire building, be introduced to our current Studio Artists and explore the contexts within which they work.

The Gertrude Studio Open Day was held on Saturday 19 November from 12–4pm.
