The two-year Gertrude Studio Program has been at the core of the organisation since its founding more than four decades ago.

Gertrude manages 16 highly subsidised artist studios located at Gertrude Contemporary, 21-31 High Street, Preston South. The studios are co-located with Gertrude’s public exhibition spaces and the organisation’s offices. Studio artists have use of shared communal spaces and workshop facilities on-site. Please note that the studios are non-residential, individual spaces on a site shared with other artists working across a range of mediums.
\n
Gertrude invites applications from contemporary artists working across any medium to express their interest in the two-year program.
\n
This program is intended for professional artists whose work reflects the rich intersectionality of contemporary arts practice, including sculpture, painting, performance, installation, photography, video, drawing, contemporary dance, and experimental practices.
\n
Each year, eight new artists are invited into the program and move into their studios progressively throughout the year. Studios become available on a rolling schedule throughout the calendar year. Intake timing will be discussed with successful applicants.
\n
Gertrude also offers a fully subsidised studio for a First Nations artist in each intake. Applications for this fully subsidised studio are assessed by a panel consisting of First Nations artists and arts industry peers.
\n
General applications are considered by an advisory committee composed of Gertrude staff, a current Gertrude Studio Artist, a former Gertrude Studio Artist, and an external curator or arts professional.
\n
Gertrude encourages applications from First Nations applicants, as well as people living at the intersections of cultural, linguistic, gender-diverse, and d/Deaf or disabled experiences. Gertrude is committed to providing a culturally safe space and respectful workplace in dialogue with all staff and participating artists.
\n
Studios, access, and fees
\n
The 16 studios are each approximately 32 square metres in size, individually lockable, stud-walled, and have open ceilings. The grid ceiling can be easily reconfigured for mounting, suspending and power utility. Artists in the program also have access to shared workshops. Gertrude has internet access, air conditioning and heating throughout. Artists have access to their studios 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
\n
As the studios share open ceilings, there are limitations on material and chemical usage in the space. Please consider if a shared studio environment is best suited to you and your practice. If you have not visited the site before and would like to make enquiries about the specific studio environment, please contact Gertrude via apply@gertrude.org.au or 03 9480 0068.
\n
While highly subsidised, there is a monthly fee of $300 (inc. GST) for each studio as well as a refundable bond of $300. Gertrude offers a fully subsidised studio for a First Nations artist (see Eligibility, Selection and Cultural Safety below).
\n
You can find site access information for Gertrude Contemporary and Gertrude Glasshouse here. If you have any additional access requirements or would like to have a conversation with a staff member, please contact Gertrude via apply@gertrude.org.au or 03 9480 0068.
\n
For internationally based artists, please note that Gertrude is not able to provide any financial assistance for costs associated with relocating or housing.
\n
Exhibition outcomes
\n
As part of the Studio Program, artists are offered a solo exhibition at Gertrude Glasshouse, a standalone project space in Collingwood. Gertrude provides artist fees and a production budget for these exhibitions.
\n
Studio Artists also present work within the annual Gertrude Studios exhibitions, a highly anticipated group exhibition presenting new and recent works by all the studio artists in the program. Gertrude provides an artist fee for participation in this exhibition.
\n
All exhibitions at Gertrude Contemporary and Gertrude Glasshouse include curatorial and installation support, marketing and professional exhibition documentation.
\n
Professional development opportunities
\n
The Gertrude Studio Program also offers professional development opportunities through facilitated studio visits by Australian and international curators and museum directors and the wider sector.
\n
Artists in the program are encouraged to participate in the organisation's activities, which includes studio visits, open studios, public programs and educational initiatives. Participation in public and education programs is remunerated.
\n

\n
Application details
\n
Submissions
\n
A fully completed application consists of:
\n
 1. Completed application
\n
 2.
