Ash Kilmartin
2012 - 2014
Ash Kilmartin (b. Auckland, New Zealand) is an artist and writer based in Melbourne.
Kilmartin's constructed sculptural works draw forms and references from the histories of design, architecture and theatre, often using the particular production cycles of these forms and of natural forms as models for the production of art. Other works occur as semi-permanent alterations to space, or as temporary sculptural responses to their particular locations. Each work considers the nature of labour and time, and how value is conferred through the idea of 'work'.
Recent solo exhibitions include Kilmartin House Museum, Studio 12, Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne; The Perpetual Planner, RM, Auckland; STOP WORK, Y3K, Melbourne; RAIN: A one-day sculpture garden, 242 Young Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne; and Unforeseen Employment, George Fraser Gallery, Auckland. Selected group exhibitions include Impossible Objects II, Utopian Slumps, Melbourne; HOUSE WEAR, State of Design Festival, Melbourne; Another Yummy Fantasy II, TCB, Melbourne; To Say The Least, Newcall Gallery, Auckland; Stages of Production, TCB, Melbourne; Magazine, Gambia Castle, Auckland; Itinerant Press, SCAPE Biennial of Public Art, Christchurch; and Architecture for the Nation, ARTSPACE, Auckland.
Ash Kilmartin holds Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the Elam School of Fine Arts, the University of Auckland and the University of Melbourne; was co-curator of WINDOW, the University of Auckland's contemporary art project space, 2007-2009; and in 2012 undertook a mentorship with Blair French as part of the Gertrude Contemporary and Art and Australia Emerging Writers Program.
