Studios
The Gertrude Studios have supported over 300 artists since establishment in 1985.
Studio Program
Gertrude is now accepting applications for the Gertrude Studio Program 2025 intake. In 2025, we will be celebrating forty years of Gertrude. Read more about the program and apply here.
The Gertrude Studio Program sits at the heart of our organisation in our primary premises in Preston South. The highly competitive application–based program supports 16 artists for a two–year period, with 8 artists invited to join the program each year. Gertrude is committed to supporting artists at key moments in the development of their practice, to represent an inter–generational selection of artists, and to support a diverse range of artistic practices. The selection of artists is by a competitive application process led by an advisory committee.
Dedicated First Nations Studio
Each year, Gertrude offers a fully-subsidised studio for a First Nations artist as part of the Gertrude Studio Program call out. At any given time there are at least two First Nations artists in the Gertrude Studio Program.
The fully-subsidised studio opportunity is open to First Nations peoples of Australia, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Applicants for the fully-subsidised studio are assessed and determined by a panel of First Nations representatives.
Gertrude is strongly committed to cultural diversity and cultural safety in all aspects of our program and operations. For applicants who wish to read more about how we are demonstrating this, please read our Commitment to Cultural Diversity and Cultural Safety.
Residencies Program
Initiated in 1985, the Gertrude Residency Program is dedicated to supporting the practices of visiting artists and curators. Originally known as the Studio 18 program, the residency was housed in the self-contained studio apartment at the organisation's Fitzroy premises until 2017. The Gertrude Residency Program is now organised with external partners, including the Norma Redpath Studio, facilitated by the University of Melbourne.
Residencies are by invitation only.
