200 Gertrude Street
200 Gertrude Street, FitzroyThe title of the 2005 Gertrude Studios exhibition, The Air Between Us alludes to the intrinsic, yet often discreet, relationships between the studios and the artists working within them to the overall program of Gertrude Contemporary. Encompassing video, painting, performance, sculpture, new media and beyond, The Air Between Us transformed Gertrude’s gallery spaces, activating a critical tension which reflected both the diversity and strength of the studio artists’ practices. 2005 had seen the contribution of Gertrude studio artists to a range of significant projects in Australia and internationally, including several major exhibition projects at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Primavera at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art and Pitch Your Own Tent at the Monash University Museum of Art. Studio artists had also been awarded short-term residencies in Norway, Los Angeles and New York, and undertook numerous projects for artist-run spaces, museums, festivals and publications; as well as many more activities locally, nationally and internationally.
